Osvaldo Golijov’s Lullaby and Doina pairs Yiddish and Gypsy melodies, inspired by a story of love and fate during World War II. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco fled Mussolini’s Italy in 1939 and became an American citizen; his Eclogues for flute, English horn and guitar were written late in life. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor is a meditation in grief at the death of his friend, Ivan Sollertinsky, who perished while evacuating Leningrad to escape the Nazi occupation. Also on this program, Elena Ruehr’s Lift, a lyrical and virtuosic piece for solo cello inspired by humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize-winner Malala Yousafzai and her story of strength, grace, and triumph.
