VINES Obsidian Magnified for flute and violin
LIGETI Six Bagatelles  for wind quintet
SUMMER Julie-O for solo cello
SCHUMANN Piano Quintet Op. 44 in E-flat

Many of us escape a hard time by throwing ourselves into work, but only Robert Schumann ended up with his transformative “chamber music year” to show for it. His entire chamber output – minus one earlier experiment in the genre – was composed between 1842-43. The most famous is likely the Piano Quintet in E-flat. On this program, hear the conversational intricacy of the Quintet along with György Ligeti’s raucous woodwind transcription of six movements from his Musica Ricercata  - literally “searching music.”  Composer and cellist Mark Summer of the Turtle Island String Quartet transforms the cello with bold new sounds.  Plus, hear the US premiere of Obsidian Magnified by Nicholas Vines, written for the Japanese duo mmm… in response to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
