WOOLF – Ten Images for clarinet and cello (2001)
BRAHMS – Trio in E-flat for horn, violin and piano, Op. 40 (1891)

The great Ástor Piazzolla revels in the tango, while Brahms evokes a summer on the countryside with his iconic Horn Trio.  Plus a quintet with harp by Nino Rota – composer of the Godfather film score – and a collection of contrasting miniatures for clarinet and cello by Luna Pearl Woolf.

HOLLAND – The Clarity of Cold Air for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion (2013)  WORLD PREMIERE
DVOŘÁK – Piano quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81 (1887)

Dvořák fuses Czech folk music and classical idioms in the piano quintet in A, while the Frenchman Eugene Bozza brings us quintessential wind music from the City of Light.  Later, Americans merge classical and jazz – David Amram in a horn tribute to Theolonious Monk, and Jonathan Bailey Holland in a world premiere, The Clarity of Cold Air.

PAPPALARDO COMPOSITION COMPETITION

Tonight, works for woodwinds.  Béla Bartók’s Contrasts, written for Benny Goodman, the “King of Swing.”  Plus Mozart’s breathtaking flute quartet in D, and Feng (“Wind”) by the Chinese composer Chen Yi. And a world premiere by the winner of the Pappalardo Composition Competition.

SCHIFRIN – La Nouvelle Orleans for wind quintet (1987)

Explorers and their music: from the first piano trio by a teenage Claude Debussy, to a Dixieland wind quintet by Lalo Schifrin.  Plus, a quintet for clarinet and strings by Boston composer and world traveler Evan Ziporyn, and an intriguing work for dancer accompanied by solo flute – at times played in unexpected ways – by John Fonville.
