MESSAIEN – Interstellar Call
ZIPORYN – Project for a Revolution in New York – Boston premiere
Plus a world premiere by the Longy student winner of the Pappalardo Composition Competition

with composer and clarinetist Evan Ziporyn, and filmmaker Christine Southworth

Evan Ziporyn’s Projet pour une révolution à New York (“Project for a Revolution in New York”) was inspired by Robbe-Grillet’s 1970 novel of the same name, and the result is “a hazy series of moments, themselves drawn from pulp fiction, film noir, and other parts of the collective unconscious.” Hear the Boston premiere, accompanied by new original films by Christine Southworth, with the composer joining the ensemble. Also on the program, the haunting extended horn solo from Olivier Messiaen’s Des canyons aux étoiles… (“From the canyons to the stars…”), commissioned for the US bicentennial.  Plus: a quartet for bassoon and strings by the eighteenth-century composer and flutist François Devienne, so prolific he became known as “the French Mozart,” and a world premiere quintet for strings, double reeds, and piano by the winner of the Pappalardo Composition Competition.
