Augusta Read Thomas

PAGANINI – Duetto No. 3 for violin and bassoon
THOMAS – Avian Escapades – Boston premiere
KORDE – Tenderness of Cranes for solo flute
COPLAND – Sextet

Aaron Copland arranged his devilishly difficult Short Symphony for chamber ensemble in the 1930s, with the hope that it would be more frequently performed. The resulting Sextet is classic Copland: vigorous rhythms and soaring melodies. Also on the program, the Boston premiere of Augusta Read Thomas’s Avian Escapades for woodwind quintet, a set of three jazz-influenced movements depicting hummingbirds, swans and canaries. And Boston composer Shirish Korde’s Tenderness of Cranes, which was inspired by a traditional Japanese work for the shakuhachi flute. Plus, some quirky duets for violin and bassoon by the ultimate virtuoso, Niccolò Paganini.
