“Before I Commit” (“Pria ch’io l’impegno”) was the smash hit aria of the 1797 season in Vienna. Beethoven captured the trendy tune for us to enjoy in perpetuity by using it for a theme in the third movement of his Trio in B-flat, Op. 11, for clarinet, cello and piano. Also on the program, William Bergsma’s The Voice of the Coelacanth, for horn, violin and piano, inspired by the 1933 discovery of an ancient fish species once believed to be extinct, and Ravel’s vocalise, Piece en forme de habanera, in an arrangement for oboe and harp. Plus, Fang Man’s Larkspur, which sonically captures the beauty and symbolism of the flower.
